The following text is from the official website of the NFC Forum and consortium on NFC technology. http://www.nfc-forum.org

Near Field Communication (NFC)
is a standards-based, short-range wireless connectivity technology that enables simple and safe two-way interactions among electronic devices, allowing consumers to perform contactless transactions, access digital content and connect devices with a single touch.

Near Field Communication (NFC) technology evolved from a combination of contactless identification and interconnection technologies. NFC operates in the 13.56 MHz frequency range, over a typical distance of a few centimeters. The underlying layers of NFC technology are ISO, ECMA, and ETSI standards.

NFC technology
is supported by all leading mobile device manufacturers and is compatible with millions of contactless cards already in use worldwide. NFC also simplifies setup of longer-range wireless technologies, such as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

Thanks to NFC technology, we will be able to "pick up" information from our environment. NFC technology allows mobile devices to "read" information stored in "tags" on everyday objects. These can be affixed to physical objects such as posters, bus stop signs, street signs, medicines, certificates, food packaging and much more. You will know where to find the tag by looking for the NFC Forum "Target Mark" on the object.

Actually, there's a GREAT deal more to this than meets the eye.  NFC s just one of several wireless techs that are going to change our lives.  Take a look at david-k-rose.com to see what I mean.
